Prostate Artery Embolisation

What is prostate artery embolisation (PAE)?

Prostate artery embolisation (PAE) is a minimally invasive interventional radiology procedure that is as a treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition affecting aging men. Symptoms often include waking up at night to urinate, passing urine often during the day, a weak urinary stream and straining to pass urine.

This procedure is usually done through a tiny pinhole in the wrist. By blocking targeted arteries, an interventional radiologist is able to reduce blood flow to the prostate, which causes it to shrink, alleviating symptoms of BPH.

The minimally invasive procedural techniques also reduce recovery time, allowing patients to walk within minutes of the procedure, and limits the impact on sexual function and urinary continence.
